The Latin Table by Chef Isabel Cruz, Chef/Owner of Isabel's Cantina and Barrio Star | San Diego, California
No matter how many cookbooks in your collection, make room for one more: Isabel Cruz’s second cookbook, The Latin Table. San Diego’s favored Latina chef has compiled more than a hundred signature recipes of her lively Latin-Asian fusion cuisine and award-winning cocktails. Even Deepak Chopra has weighed in with a most flattering praise ending with a truism necessary in every successful kitchen: A nice combination of love and creation. Cruz, who said she’s “not a ‘chef-fy’ chef” because she had no formal training, got enough on-the-job experience to develop her own informal, but totally engaging, cooking style. People who know her describe her as “a chef/cook that loves to eat and entertain”. Since, as Cruz correctly stated, the two “always go together”, she, naturally, wanted to invite people into her world. The Latin Table gets the point across perfectly. “I want to share some of the things I have learned over my 30-plus years of cooking,” Cruz said, “to make it easier for people to cook good food for their family and friends. There is something special about cooking for and nurturing the people you care about. I also want to make it easier for people to throw a good party!” The Latin Table hits all the bases, from appetizers to cocktails to desserts. Each recipe exemplifies her version of the Culinary Arts: vibrant colors, super flavors, and healthy. And they were tested in her restaurants. No wonder her patrons line up to this day outside her restaurant doors to get a seat.
