The country’s longest river has quenched the thirst of Roman armies, baptized believers of Christianity, enabled Viking raids, supplied building materials for the chateaux of the upper crust, and continues, to this day, a friend to farmers and provider of shelter in the caves that pock the travertine bluffs along its sediment-rich banks.
