Synopsis: Foodies West – FoodCorps, AmeriCorps

“FoodCorps is a nationwide team of leaders that connects kids to real food and helps them grow up healthy,” co-founder and communications director, Jerusha Klemperer, explained. “We formed as an organization in the fall of 2010 and launched our first class of service members in August of 2011. We started with 50 service members in 10 states, grew last year to 80 service members in 12 states, and are now at 125 service members in 15 states.” Klemperer, who at 40 said she is “one of the older folks” of Food Corps, was Associate Director of National Programs at Slow Food USA. She strategized the Time for Lunch, Dig In and Farmarazzi initiatives. She and her fellow FoodCorps co-founders came together in 2009 when the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act wa s approved. The act resuscitated AmeriCorps, which provides the elbow grease for FoodCorps. The young service members head out to communities in participating sites* to connect the kids, parents and school directors to healthy food—what it is and where it comes from. They help build and tend school gardens, and they form partnerships with local farmers to make high-quality food available in the cafeterias. Apparently people are starting to listen.
