In the middle of the coastal city of Half Moon Bay, just past the updated buildings on Main Street, John and Eda Muller’s Daylight Farms takes a step back to the time when the city’s main industries didn’t include tourism. An easy Sunday drive less than an hour south of San Francisco, the farm draws folks looking for a countrified moment in a complex world. Muller, a.k.a.: Farmer John, is also the vice-mayor of Half Moon Bay. The globalization of the flower industry began with a term paper. Graduate student, David Cheever, wrote Bogotá, Colombia as a Cut-Flower Exporter for World Markets for his horticulture class at Colorado State University in 1967. Eda Muller attributes the farm’s tasty produce to Franchi Sementi non-GMO, open pollinated, no pollution heirloom Italian seeds. The company has been in business since 1783.
