deseo at Westin Kierland (with Chef de Cuisine Derek Biazo | Scottsdale, Arizona From the day deseo opened its doors, things have always happened a little differently in there. This started with the cuisine, a fusion of traditional Latin American foods with South American leanings prepared in a contemporary style. The menu didn’t fixate on churrasco and black beans. Rather it embraced South America’s diverse cultural roots and made ceviche a featured item. This got deseo quick acclaim and enduring excellent reviews. The restaurant’s Latin-leaning décor didn’t stop with the solar-colored draperies. Instead, it turned into a live cultural reality show when it became a working studio for collectible artist Nelson Miranda-Garcia. The Cuban-born artist created Fantasia-like paintings full of folklore from his homeland. Then F+B director, Jeff Barba, decided to totally revamp the wine list with South American labels. The bold move actually got deseo a couple of unexpected awards. Now what? Enter Derek Biazo, the new chef de cuisine that came on board this summer. Biazo, an Arizona native from Kingman, who spent almost a decade in the Bay Area where he rated among the best chefs, has returned to his Arizona homeland to bring something different to this favored venue. Biazo makes a perfect fit.
